An Irregular Bet

“Man from the South” is a short story by Roald Dahl, which is based on a bet of one young man and one old man. First there was this young man that was going to smoke a cigar, when the older man come and start talking of the lighter that the young man has. The bet was that if this young man can run his lighter 10 times without failing we won a Cadilac, but if he doesn't he would lose; his finger…Later on they went to the old man house to complete the bet, they were counting 8 and a women came in the door, she started shouting “Carlos, Carlos!”And take off the knife from the young man hand. The women started asking forgiveness and explain the things of this old man; later she get near the table and everyone can see that she only had a finger and the thumb on his hand.

Roald Dahl uses many unique words that help the reader imagine exactly what is happening in the story, on their minds. For example;

“…Then he stared shifting about in his seat, and rubbing his chest, and stroking the back of his neck, and finally he placed both hands on his knees and began tapping his against his knee-caps soon he was tapping with one of his feet as well…”(4)

This example makes by the use of specific actions that the man is doing so we can imagine the old man really unsettled and moving a lot, this is a example of feeling because he is touching all of his body and we know that because he uses words like "rubbing" or tapping”. We can infer that the man is anxious and I think that is because the bet they are going to make. The author uses many adjectives to describe the characters, settings and everything that is happening on the story. Like for example the description of the old man Roald Dahl said;

 "Just then I noticed a small, oldish man walking briskly around the edge of the pool. He was immaculately dressed in a white suit and he walked very quickly with little bouncing strides, pushing himself high up onto his toes with each step. He had on a large creamy panama hat, and he came bouncing along the side of the pool, looking at the people and the chairs.”(1)

This can show us the type of person and the personality in general of this man. With his suit and his panama we can imagine him as a reach and fine person and we can imagine that the way he wins all his money, is by the bets he make.

In conclusion I think that Roald Dahl story "Man from the South" is very interesting and have a unique theme and idea of the story. This teaches us that we don’t need to talk or make anything with strangers specially bets. Also make us realize that young people are very risk takers like the American boy that for winning something good he risk another thing that can be more important.

Release not what we though

The plan that The Giver thought of

With all Jonas training for being the new receiver he is starting to question for what is the school, he stopped taking the pills and he is starting to do bad things that are against the community rules. They were playing a war game and Jonas discuss with Asher about this. This was because Jonas knew the memorie of war and it isn't really just a joke or game but if they would knew what it is and wouldn't think the same. Jonas was always interested in the word release, what does it mean? Until finally he ask to the Giver, they start talking about this until they saw a video of the morning release. It was his father in the release of the twins, he saw it and he get shocked. Release isn't just that they go to elsewhere but, they are killed. They don't really know what are they doing but is just their job. It was such a shock to Jonas that he stay with the Giver to sleep so he can explain and they can talk some more. One of this thing they talked was who was the other receiver of memories, the one that failed. The Giver told him she was Rosemary and that her failure has some part his fault. She get one painful memory and she just didn't accept it and asked for release. There comes the problems, when she was released memories were also and they returned to the community that was a huge problem for all the community. From that incident the rules for being a receiver come and that’s why he can’t apply for release. The release of Rosemary was such a painful thing for the Giver because she was his daughter. Later on they had a plan so they can free all the community and they can have memories.

Rosemary with the Giver relationship

The importance of the receiver of memories inn the community is very big. They need it for everything and especially for taking decision that they don’t know. Like in page 144 were they were talking about Rosemary and how her release affected everyone, "You just stay away from the river, my friend ," he said. "The community lost Rosary after five weeks and it was a disaster for them. I don’t now what the community would do if they lost you." This quote mean much and tell us all the importance that the receiver has in the community. If they would loos him or release him it would be worst for all the people in it. Because all memories will come back and there would be chaos. This make me think more of Rosemary. How she was and why she didn’t have the braveness to keep being the receiver of memories. Rosemary was The Giver daughters and his loss was a really huge impact on the Givers life, I think that he treat Jonas lie to Rosemary as if he was his son too.

Colors returning

We are getting to the final of the book and we have many important things are happening on the book.We already know what the word release mean and that is death in other words. My prion f what is going to happen next is that they are going to do the plan that they has but it isn't going to be so simple.They are going to have many problems and people of the community will try to stop him. Also I thought that he isn't just going to go alone but ask to his friends if they want to join him. At the final they would achieve what they want and that would be the end of the story.

Love,what does it mean?

Now Jonas have a bunch of memories stored in his life. He knows how the society was in the past and he like it more, he has the idea that how about if it is like in the past with all the memories and choices people can make. We can see that the importance to have a receiver is so he can give his opinion for things that the elders don't know. Like the airplane that they didn't know what it was and they called The Giver so he can tell them. Jonas someday have a recreational time, The Giver has some pain days and he send Jonas to do something else. One day Jonas was going to his trainment and The Giver was in pain, but this time he didn't leave but he gave him this pain memories so he can have less pain. It was the warfare, it was one of the worst memories they had and Jonas has a huge impact with this memories. The Giver was really sorry for this and form then he just gave good and happy memories so the warfare memories wasn't so harmful. One of this one was the Family union and love. Love, what does it mean?  This was the favorite memories of The Giver and Jonas like it too and he thought that love was great! He went to tell his parents if they love him and they respond with just a "precision of language." After that Jonas went right up to his room where baby Gabe was, then something occurred...Jonas gave a memories to him so he can fall asleep.

        Jonas now is learning all the honor and importance that the receiver of memories has. Like in page 105 were Jonas and the Giver are talking, the Giver said. "It’s just that...without the memories it’s all meaningless. They gave that burden to me. And to the previous Receiver. And the one before him." So the Receiver position is like the most important in this community. Without him they would not know anything and they would have many problems. The Receiver need to be always a special person. I think that they are the only people that are different in this community. Like they don’t accept the differences here and that why they can’t see the colors, but they are different from other and that’s why they can do this. In real life everyone is different and that what makes it real. If there wouldn’t be any difference then it would be boring and we wouldn’t live actually. In Truman Show there are difference but all is controlled and it is also not life. The people that Truman know are all actors and no one really care of him is just a job. So the importance of the memories is what makes difference, memories make that people know things and with that thing there are difference and then it creates what is called real life.

Connect to Jonas difference from the rest.

         To summarize all we have learn many things of how the society in this world is. And we can see that is quite bad they really can’t live their lives. No one have memories of nothing and just t receiver have them, so they are really important for the society. Also they don’t have any feeling and they really can’t express anything. Now I can predict that Jonas is going to break more rules, he is going to try to change how the community works and to memories to come back.

Lets Talk of Memories

           Jonas has been selected the receiver of memories! This is one of the most important jobs in the society and his training need to begin. First he received all the rules and thing he need to do for his jobs and in this rules there were many exceptions from the general rules like he can lye or that he can’t tell his dreams. But before one of his trainings starts, Jonas have his vision again, he saw Fiona's hair red. He went and tell The Giver that he saw it and then we knew that was the capacity to see beyond. The Giver gave his first memories to Jonas, the memories of snow. In here he can imagine a sled and a hill and that he get in the sled and ride it down the hill. But Jonas was still confused of why do they advertise him that this job would have pain. After that question The Giver gave him the memories of burn or sun and Jonas feel the pain and knew how it was and feels. Then we see that they never have seen colors and don't know what it is, The Giver in fact he haven't seen colors give the memories of color red to him. Just a moment later he realized that it would be better to give him the memories of the rainbow.
             This part of the book has been very important and interesting. It show many thing that will take actions in future of the book. There are many quotes in the book that shows this like in page 95. "Of course. When you receive the memories.You have the capacity to see beyond. You’ll gain wisdom, then, along with colors. And lots more." This quote represent the job that Jonas will have in as simple as 23 words. It says the capacities he will need and that fortunately Jonas have them, and that the capacity to see beyond is in every memories. So I can infer this is a type of memories that they have from the past that just some type of people have it and that it can be a big problem if used incorrectly or very help full if its use it like you are supposed. With these quote we infer that they can’t see the colors and just the people that receives this memories can. Including to the "and more" here comes the pain and the pleasure too. All the pain can be very bad but is necessary to be known so he can be prepare for something that can happen in future. With pleasure we really can say that it feels very good but there can be problems with these some really big. In conclusion This quote really get my attention and make me think a lot and now I really can have an idea of what the book would be more clear.
               In the next chapters I think that Jonas is going to start acting different with everyone. He is going to realize that this society is too much controlled and not very realistic. He is going to brake many rules even the one that he is given as a receiver that they brake the general rules for everyone. Do Jonas have all the ability to make a good role as the new receiver or is he going to be a deception to all? So what are your prediction of this book from what I have shown you above?

The Giver

            In chapters 5-8 Jonas is getting to his puberty age. What Jonas got were stirrings and that showed that he is growing and he need to tell to her parents about this and they gave him some pills so stirrings stop and this show me that in this community having feelings are considered bad and no one can have them. Then the big day of the ceremony finally come. He waited and watched each ritual pass until the twelves and the most important for Jonas came. The elders start telling each person their assignment and when Jonas turn came they skipped him and continue the ceremony. Then when they finish telling all the assignments they apologized with Jonas and tell him that he was selected. His assignment is going to be the new receiver of memories and for that he need to have many qualities and one special, to see beyond.

             In these chapters there were some very important quotes that tell of what the book is going to be about. One of this were on page 60 were they give the assignemnt to Jonas, "Jonas has not been assigned," she informed the crowd, and his heart sank. Then she went on. "Jonas has been selected." This quote really mean a lot and show us a very important change in the book, we`ve been waiting for this moment that Jonas get his assignment, this have been like what all the book has been about until this far. So this quote means that the selection is something more important than an assignment, and that he is doing an important thing that will help all the community. Also the selection is does`nt necessary a good thing, it can be bad and like Jonas is going to have a hard time learning to be the receiver of memories.

           As final thoughts, this book has been really interesting and it have called my attention. I like all the suspense they give so you want to keep reading and reading. What I can predict that will happen next is that Jonas is going to the trainment for being the new receiver of memories, like the book said he is going to have lot of painful things to do and he is going to try to give up and the actual receiver of memories is going to teach him things so he never give up. All of this teachings is going to make Jonas a very good receiver of memories and everybody is going to be proud of him.

The Giver

          What has happened in the book so far is that Jonas is a kid that lives like in a controlled world. He has many rules to follow and they got lot of rituals they need to complete. One of this can be the ritual of the Ones and the Twelves where here you become a one (person actually) and the twelve were you become like a man and have your assignment for the rest of the live. Jonas is near to the twelves and he had been talking with his parents of the assignments and the volunteer hours he need to complete. Then they talk with his sister and she said that she would like to be a birth mother but then they told her that if she was one she wouldn't be very much respected. Later on they went to saw a baby and the baby had a different color eyes like Jonas have them and they thought that this baby can be special and different to others.   Then Jonas need to do volunteer hours in the house of the old with Fiona and Asher to help this old people to take baths and they would take care of them. Jonas liked Fiona he said that she was a good person and that he really liked her so he passed all the day with her in the Old House. So that is what we have read so far and in my opinion this book is very interesting and has a hided story behind him.

             My textual reference is Lily "I hope I get assigned to be a birth mother." Mother "Lily! dont say that. There is very little honor in that Assignment.(21)" What I thought of when I see this was that there are some jobs that are more respected and meaningful than others. This can show un-respect to this people and make us think that this society has social-classes and preference in people with better things. But I think that was a good act for me that Lily want to be a birth mother so this make me thing that she don't mis-appreciate any job but also I think she said that because she dint know much about this topic and didn't know what this job is valued.รง

               In conclusion what i think of this book is that is very interesting and that has some things that are difficult  to understand. I predict that Jonas is going to do something with Fiona in the Old House like he is going to tell her the love he haves for her. What i think until now of the Jonas world is that is controlled like someone like the Truman show that can see it all and control everything of what they do. Another thing I can predict is that Jonas in the twelves in going to do something controversial or have to do something that is very important and different from the rest.

What i think this book would be about is that there is this man called the Giver. This is an very old and wise man that know many things and is like the wiser of the city. This man would have a very important job to do and that would be the develop of the story. What I thought when interviwing the book was that Jonas is like a young person that need to know everything form the Giver. This would be in case if the Giver dies and then ik no one knows anything they would advance and there cuty would change.

What i think this quote means is that its like advertising the childrens right now of the future and so we can have an idea of how its going to be if we keep like this. This is like dedicating for something that can happen and we need to be prepared, for this quote is very clear that this is going to be in the future. The part that said "to whom we entrust the future" is telling for the people that are going to be in the future and are going to make real changes and actions in the future.

What I think is going to happen is that at first Jonas is going to dislike the Giver and is going to think like if he is a boring old man. But thne he would notice he is the wiser man and that he is an example to follow.At the end both are going to be friends and take care of eacg pther and that the Giver is going to leave him with one duty to complete, one the Giver never get to do it.
